Blu Boy

Blu Boy Chocolate Cafe and Cakery popped up a year or so ago right downtown, next to the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. It's a cute little shop with friendly employees and delicious desserts. The location is really great, right in the middle of downtown. Perfect for an after dinner treat on the weekend or a sugary snack during the day.

Blu Boy is one of the few places in Bloomington to find cupcakes. They use a very rich, creamy buttercream which, while delicious, can get a little overwhelming. In the past they swirled the buttercream super-high, but have recently downsized, in my opinion, to a more manageable and proportional amount of frosting. See these cupcakes; Blueberry vs Cinnamon Hazelnut Chocolate. My favorite cupcake ever at Blu Boy was the Banana Chocolate. The cake was a light, moist white cake flavored with banana. And the addition of shaved chocolate to the buttercream was melt-in-your-mouth amazing. I also recently had a Cinnamon Hazelnut Chocolate that was fabulous. I've had a few underwhelming cupcakes at Blu Boy, with dry, crumbly cake, but overall they've been quite good. The flavors rotate so you never know exactly what will be available, usually there are 2-3 options.

Blu boy makes good cupcakes, but even better cake. Their 3 main varieties; Chocolate with Chocolate buttercream, Vanilla with Berry buttercream, and Hummingbird with lemon curd buttercream are all super delicious. They sell the cake by the slice at the shop, or as whole cakes to order, and in the form of fancypants wedding and party cakes. My friend Katy got married in August and ordered her cake from Blu Boy. It was gorgeous and delicious but quite expensive. There were 3 square layers with chocolate cake and cherry ganache on top, hummingbird in the middle, and vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream on the bottom. Blu Boy special ordered the pattern for the cake and it turned out really lovely.

Other yummy desserts include cookies, brownies, macarons, gourmet chocolates, and ice cream. The ice cream is good, with both basic and innovative flavors. I enjoyed the Coconut Rum flavor, it tasted just like an extra rich and creamy pina colada, and the Strawberry was yummy too. The best part of the ice cream is that Blu boy makes their own waffle cones, and they're so tasty. Even better when you visit the shop while they're making the cones, the smell is amazing! You can also get your ice cream in sundae form. I really liked my Salted Caramel Sundae, but Katy had the Brownie Sundae and found the brownie to be too hard and dry, though the mudslide ice cream was good.

A few weeks ago I had an Oatmeal Raisin cookie that was amazing. Deliciously buttery and a bit crunchy on the outside, but still moist in the middle. Blu Boy also makes some really lovely macarons. This Lemon Blood Orange macaron had that nice balance of delicate but chewy with a lovely citrus filling in the middle. Also yummy is Blu Boy's Creme Brulee, Mariann had it last time she was in Btown. I really need to try some of their gourmet chocolates, they're always so beautiful on display but most times I visit the shop, I'm craving cupcakes or cookies or brownies!

Blu Boy is only open until six most weekdays and until 10 on Fridays and Saturdays, closed Sundays. I wish it was open later during the week! Many times I've eaten somewhere downtown then wanted an after dinner treat around 7-8ish. But Blu boy has been closed... Anyway it's a small complaint. Definitely check out Blu Boy if you're in the mood for something sweet!
